SUMMARY:Book Signing and Lecture: Growing Up Coastal by Clay Sikes
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we host Clay Sikes as he talks about his new book: Growing Up Coastal: Life on the Georgia Coast\n\nBooks will be available for sale.\n\nIllustrated by Chris Walker\n\nIn the drug-filled 1960s and 1970s\, life for a young person in Liberty County Georgia was much like living in the wild west. With a military base on the west end of the county and a pristine\, well-traveled coastline to the east\, life in the small Southern town was anything but dull. And being the son and grandson of the local sheriffs meant that Clay saw much more than the average citizen.\nThe stories in this book chronicle the drastic cultural shift that was occurring in America during the ‘60s and ‘70s\, from the birth of the booming new smuggling cocaine and marijuana trade to the influx of thousands of troops to a new military base on the Georgia Coast. For a teenager like Clay\, these were times filled with excitement\, creating lifelong bonds\, and memories lasting a lifetime. These are the extraordinary tales of ordinary people told by a man who was there to witness it all.\n\nAbout the Author\n\nClay Sikes was born and raised on the Georgia Coast. After graduating from Georgia Southern in 1971\, he returned to the coast and found his way into real estate\, an industry that was about to experience a rapid boom.\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, June 2\, 2022\, 7 pm\n\nWhere: Wetlands Center at J F Gregory Park\n500 Cedar St.\nRichmond Hill\, GA\n\nMembers of the Historical Society are free. The cost for Non-Members is $10.\n\nNon-Members purchase tickets here.\n\nRefreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Book Signing and Lecture: Old Southern Cookery
DESCRIPTION:Book Signing by Christopher E. Hendricks\nOld Southern Cookery: Mary Randolph’s Recipes from America’s First Regional Cookbook Adapted for Today’s Kitchen\nThis edition gives new life to a beloved book that has spanned two centuries. Using the historic recipes from Mary Randolph’s 1824 bestselling cookbook\, The Virginia House-Wife or Methodical Cook (considered by many culinary historians to be the first real American\ncookbook––and all describe it as the first regional cookbook)\, the authors have chosen the best of the original recipes to show how home cooks can prepare the food using contemporary methods. In translating these historic cooking methods to today’s kitchen techniques\, headnotes contain pertinent historic facts about such things as butchery\, firewood cooking\, spices used\, European origins of certain recipes\, dishes brought by enslaved people to the New World\, and even how our cooking utensils have\nevolved through two centuries.\nChristopher E. Hendricks is a Professor of History at Georgia Southern University in Savannah\, where he has taught since 1993. He is the author of numerous publications\, including the Backcountry Towns of Colonial Virginia.\nThis lecture will be held at the Wetlands Center in J. F. Gregory Park. Cost: Free Books available for purchase.\nDonations and memberships to the Richmond Hill Historical Society are appreciated.

SUMMARY:150th Anniversary of Bryan Neck Missionary Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Bryan Neck Missionary Baptist Church. We will tour the historic chapel and cemetery\, learn the history\, and enjoy the church choir. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. \nOrganized in 1869\, this is the oldest African-American church congregation in lower Bryan County. The first structure for the church\, a Prayer House\, was built in 1870 on this site near the white Presbyterian Church (Burnt Church). London Harris\, a freedman and spiritual leader of the local black community\, was one of the organizers and first pastors for the church. The church was renovated and enlarged at the time the nearby Carver school was built in 1939.

SUMMARY:The History of the Willow Run Bomber Plant
DESCRIPTION:The Richmond Hill Historical Society welcomes guest speaker\, Dennis Norton\, founder of the Yankee Air Museum and president of the Yankee Air Museum Foundation in Belleville\, Michigan. Mr. Norton will share the history of the Willow Run Bomber Plant. \nThe story of the Yankee Air Museum began in 1941 when Willow Run Airport was built by the Ford Motor Company to serve as an airfield for their B-24 Bomber Plant. This was the first aircraft manufacturing complex to use Ford’s automotive mass production technique\, a leading technological innovation of the time. \nFollowing the events leading up to the selection of Willow Run to produce the most important aircraft of World War II\, the B-24 “Liberator” bomber\, Mr. Norton takes us through the decision process in both Washington DC and Detroit using the year prior to the United States entering World War II. That decision process led to Detroit and the automobile industry and in the case of Willow Run\, Ford Motor Company being singled out as the lead in bringing American industrial might to bear on the Axis powers\, eventually resulting in their defeat in 1945. \nFor additional information and to purchase tickets\, visit richmondhillhistoricalsociety.com
