Civil War Picket

Visit Fort McAllister any time between Noon – 4 pm on February 23rd when the fort’s plantation house will be open and ready to be explored. An interpretive ranger portraying a Civil War soldier will entertain topics of conversation ranging from fort history to Civil War medicine. This program is included with regular fort admission.
No ParkPass is required with fort admission.

Picket: Soldiers posted on guard ahead of a main force. Pickets included about 40 or 50 men each. Several pickets would form a rough line in front of the main army’s camp. In case of enemy attack, the pickets usually would have time to warn the rest of the force.
