Memorial Day Celebration at Fort McAllister

Fort McAllister, a 1,725-acre Georgia state park and home to the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy, will host a Memorial Day Commemoration Event for three consecutive days. Visitors will be able to our the fort and museum plus have the opportunity to enjoy living history programs. Saturday events will include cannon and musket firings which will take place every hour. Cost: $9 adults; $8 seniors (62+); $5 youth (ages 6-17); five and under are free. $5 parking. Annual passes…

Each week, Fort McAllister offers a program for elementary school aged children, ideal for homeschoolers and campers. The programs alternate between Ecology and History themed lessons. Themes include dying fabrics from natural dyes, learning about the daily life of a soldier, and civilians during the Civil War, and learning about different historical figures. The Eco Explorers Club will teach the children about ecology and stewardship through exploration and observation. Other topics include orienteering, building a survivor shelter, and conservation. In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Georgia's State Parks & Historic Sites are inviting citizens to volunteer for a variety of projects on Saturday, September 29. All across Georgia, outdoor enthusiasts can help with projects that aid in the preservation of our parks and natural landmarks such as a river and park clean-up at Fort McAllister State Historic Park.
